What Is Covered in a GMC Powertrain Warranty?

GMC's Powertrain Limited Warranty covers repairs to the engine, the transmission or transaxle, the transfer case (if equipped) and the drive system (propeller shafts, universal and CV joints, axle shafts, bearings and final-drive housings) when the failure comes from a defect in materials or workmanship. GMC says typical powertrain coverage lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, but some engines and model years get longer terms. It doesn't cover sensors, wiring, connectors, the radiator, hoses, coolant or cooling lines, and it never covers wear, maintenance or damage from accidents or misuse.
GMC Factory Warranty Coverage at a Glance
The terms below are what GMC's warranty and protection page lists for new vehicles, with EV and roadside terms from GMC's own pages linked below. GMC words several of them as "typical" and notes that "other durations are available." Coverage can change by model year, engine and vehicle, so the booklet that came with your truck (the Limited Warranty and Owner Assistance Information) is the final word. Terms are generally counted from the vehicle's original delivery date, and each ends at whichever limit comes first.
| Coverage | Typical term | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty | 3 years / 36,000 miles | Repairs to the whole vehicle, parts and labor, for defects in materials or workmanship |
| Powertrain Limited Warranty | 5 years / 60,000 miles (some engines longer; see below) | Engine, transmission/transaxle, transfer case and drive-system components |
| Corrosion protection | 3 years / 36,000 miles | Body and sheet metal components against corrosion |
| Rust-through protection | 6 years / 100,000 miles | Body and sheet metal rusted all the way through (an actual hole in the panel) |
| EV propulsion battery (Sierra EV, HUMMER EV) | 8 years / 100,000 miles | The battery pack and its internal components, including capacity falling below 75% of original as determined by a dealer |
| Roadside Assistance (2016+ GMC cars, light-duty trucks and EVs) | 5 years / 60,000 miles; EV towing 8 years / 100,000 miles | Towing to the nearest GM dealer, lockout service, flat-tire change, jump-start, emergency fuel delivery |
| Emissions control | Federal (and, where applicable, California) emissions warranty | Emissions-related components; the broadest applicable coverage wins |

Engines With Longer Powertrain Coverage
"5 years or 60,000 miles" is GMC's typical term, not a fixed rule. For example, the 2024 GMC Limited Warranty booklet extended powertrain coverage on the Sierra 1500's 2.7L TurboMax engine to 5 years or 100,000 miles, matching the coverage on the 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel, as reported by GM Authority. If your truck has one of those engines, or any engine newer than 2024, read your own booklet instead of assuming 60,000 miles.
What the Powertrain Warranty Covers
GMC groups covered components into three systems. The examples are from GMC's own list; your booklet has the full list.
| System | Covered components (examples GMC lists) |
|---|---|
| Engine | Engine block, cylinder head, manifolds, timing gears, oil pump, all internally lubricated parts, seals, gaskets and internal electrical components |
| Transmission / transaxle and transfer case | Case, all internally lubricated parts, mounts, seals, gaskets and internal electrical components |
| Drive systems | Propeller shafts, universal joints, constant-velocity joints, axle shafts, bearings, final-drive housings and all internally lubricated parts |
In plain terms, if a part inside the engine, transmission, transfer case or axles fails because it was built or assembled wrong, the powertrain warranty should pay for parts and labor during the coverage period. A dealer has to diagnose it as a warrantable defect first.
What It Doesn't Cover
GMC specifically lists these as not covered by the powertrain warranty:
- Sensors
- Wiring
- Connectors
- Radiator
- Hoses
- Coolant
- Cooling lines
Some of these may still be covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty while that shorter coverage is active. After 3 years or 36,000 miles, a failed sensor or leaking radiator hose on a powertrain is usually your cost.
GMC's general exclusions also apply to every warranty:
- Routine maintenance such as oil changes, filters and fluids
- Normal characteristics: slight noises, vibrations and similar
- Damage from an accident, misuse, insufficient maintenance or alteration of the vehicle
Normal wear items like brake pads and rotors are wear-and-maintenance parts, not powertrain components, so the powertrain warranty doesn't cover them. For how GMC brakes wear and when to replace them, see our guides on brake warning signs and brake pad wear sensors.

Does the Warranty Transfer to the Next Owner?
Yes. GMC says limited warranties that are still active transfer to the new owner when the vehicle is sold. The coverage stays with the vehicle, from its original delivery date and mileage. GMC notes one exception: on the 2023 HUMMER EV Edition 1 Pickup and 2024 HUMMER EV Edition 1 SUV, ownership must be kept for 6 months from delivery, or several coverages (including Bumper-to-Bumper and Electric Vehicle Propulsion) are voided.
If you're buying used, ask a GMC dealer to look up the warranty status by VIN. How much coverage is left depends on the original in-service date, not the date you buy the truck.
Certified Pre-Owned coverage
GMC's Certified Pre-Owned brochure lists a 6-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty and a 12-month/12,000-mile Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty on CPO vehicles. The powertrain term is measured from the original new-vehicle delivery date, not from when you buy the CPO truck. CPO terms change over time, so confirm the current program with the selling dealer.
How to Make a Powertrain Warranty Claim
- Take the vehicle to a GM dealer that services GMC vehicles. Warranty repairs are handled through authorized dealers.
- Describe the symptom, not a diagnosis. The dealer will diagnose the cause and decide whether it's a warrantable defect.
- Have maintenance records ready. If the failure could be blamed on missed oil changes or overheating, receipts showing you followed the maintenance schedule help your case.
- Ask about courtesy transportation if the repair will take more than a day.
- If you disagree with a denial, ask the dealer for the specific reason in writing and contact GMC customer assistance using the numbers in your warranty booklet.
What Happens After the Factory Warranty Ends
When the powertrain coverage runs out, repairs are on you unless you've bought extended coverage. GMC sells its own protection plans, and third-party plans exist too. Whether one is worth it depends on how long you'll keep the vehicle and how you use it. We go through the options in Is a GMC extended warranty worth it?
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the GMC powertrain warranty?
GMC lists 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, as the typical term, and notes that other durations are available. Some engines get longer coverage; the 2024 Sierra 1500's 2.7L TurboMax and 3.0L Duramax, for example, are covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles. Your model year's warranty booklet has the exact term.
Does the GMC powertrain warranty cover sensors and wiring?
No. GMC specifically excludes sensors, wiring, connectors, the radiator, hoses, coolant and cooling lines from powertrain coverage. Those may be covered under the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty while it's still active.
Does the powertrain warranty transfer if I sell my GMC?
Yes. Active GMC limited warranties transfer to the next owner, with coverage still counted from the original delivery date. The main exception GMC lists is a 6-month ownership requirement on the 2023 HUMMER EV Edition 1 Pickup and 2024 HUMMER EV Edition 1 SUV.
How long is the battery warranty on a GMC EV?
GMC covers the propulsion battery packs in the Sierra EV and HUMMER EV, and their internal components, for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. That includes the battery's capacity dropping below 75% of its original value during the warranty period, as determined by a certified dealer.
Can I lose my powertrain warranty by skipping maintenance?
GMC excludes damage caused by insufficient maintenance. The warranty isn't automatically cancelled, but a failure traced to neglect, such as engine damage from missed oil changes, can be denied. Keep receipts for all maintenance.
